July 22, 2020 - PVConnect vs. PVOnline
Dear Grayhawk Families,
Last night Paradise Valley's United Parent Council hosted a meeting to help families better understand the options available for online learning. As you are making your final decisions I wanted to offer some information to help guide you in understanding what PVConnect will look like for our Grayhawk students.
PVConnect is a virtual classroom where students will participate in full, online learning with scheduled, real-time virtual instruction from a Grayhawk Elementary School teacher as well as be able to interact with their Grayhawk peers. All students will be expected to attend each day, submit assignments and participate as they would if they were attending in-person.
A student's daily schedule will mimic a day similar to a traditional in-person classroom learning experience with a condensed direct teaching schedule to offer more individualized/small group instruction. Students will have a daily schedule with a set Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Science and Special Areas time. Much like in a traditional in-person classroom, the learning activities will be different day-to-day. Students will participate in whole group, small group and individual learning activities. Lunch/recess and other break times are also built into the daily schedule.
A student that receives Special Education, Honors/Gifted, and other provided services will have these services built into their daily schedule.
Here is a sample of a daily schedule for a Grayhawk First Grader:
8:45 - 9:00: Morning Announcements
9:00 - 9:30: Reading
9:30 - 10:00: Math
10:00 - 10:30: Social Studies/Science (Core Knowledge)
10:30 - 11:00: Specials (PE, Art or Music)
11:00 - 11:30: Social Emotional Learning/Intervention
11:30 - 12:00: ELA (phonics, Spelling, Grammar)
12:00 - 12:30: Writing
12:30 - 1:30: Lunch Break & Recess
1:30 - 3:15: Teachers will be holding daily small group sessions to provide more individual contact and support for students.
Teachers will be online from 8:45 - 3:15 daily, with the exception of lunch and recess from 12:30 - 1:30 PM. All grade levels will be following the same basic model. Placement of subject areas in the morning may change by grade level. ALL students and staff have a break from 12:30 - 1:30 PM for lunch. This will allow for families with multiple children to eat at the same time as well as make it easier for family planning throughout the day.
Grayhawk is committed to supplying a Chromebook to each student who does not have access to a device at home so they can participate in the PVConnect or PVOnline learning models. Chromebooks may be checked out on Tuesday, August 4th from 9:00 - 3:00 PM. Chromebooks may be checked out in the front office. Directions will be included on how to access district learning models.
I hope this information helps you have a better understanding of what Grayhawk plans to offer your child(ren). Our teachers have spent hours taking classes this summer to help support an online model that will be fun and engaging for our kiddos. I am looking forward to seeing everybody back in school and in person. Until then, we are committed to creating a virtual learning experience that will be as close to in-person as we can possibly make it.
There will more communication coming soon. Please look for my emails as important dates will be in them.
